Six foodie gifts in a jar


If you are looking for some more gift in a jar ideas here are 6 food gifts I found online.You could add them to a hamper or give as a teacher gift, who ever you decide to give one to I am sure they will love it.

Golden honey breakfast Granola

You will need a large jar

18oz old-fashioned oats (not instant or quick cook)

8 oz sliced almonds

1 cup of dried cranberries (can be replaced by dried cherries or do half and half)

1 cup light brown sugar

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp salt

6oz unsalted butter

1/2 cup of honey


Pre heat the oven to 180

In a small pan over a medium heat melt the butter and add the honey mix well

Put all the dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix to combine

Pour the melted butter and honey over and stir well to coat it all, tip onto a lined with a non stick sheet or parchment paper, in one layer.

Cook in the oven for 35 – 40 mins or until the oats are toasted and the sugar begins to caramalize stirring occasionally

Cool in the tray before putting into jars, label and on the back list the ingredients and instructions-serve with cold milk

Tie the tag onto the jar with twine,ribbon or raffia.


Chocolate bark and candy cane bark

You will need for the chocolate bark

4 large bars of any chocolate you like (dark,milk or white)

Any chopped nuts,any dried fruit ,chopped apricots,raisins,cranberries,cherries,chopped ginger,white chocolate curls,sprinkles,shredded coconut etc, you can be as classy or messy as you  like with the toppings.

Melt the chocolate while it is melting line shallow tins with baking parchment

Pour the warm chocolate onto the tin spreading to about 1/8th inch thick , if you want a swirl effect pur a little melted white chocolate on top of dark or milk chocolate and swirl with a cocktail sick.

Put your chosen toppings onto the chocolate straight away and set in the fridge, when set break into shards or cut into squares.

If you want to make candy cane bark just top the melted chocolate, put some candy canes in a bag and bash with a rolling on and sprinkle the candy cane rubble on to the chocolate and chill.

Put into jars and label, list the ingredients on the back of the label,attach with string,ribbon or raffia.

Chocolate covered pretzels

You will need

2 large bags of salted pretzels

2 bars of dark chocolate

2 bars of white chocolate

smashed candy canes

sprinkles of your choice


Melt the chocolate in separate bowls

Line trays with parchment paper

Dip the pretzels in the chocolate so you have some dark and some white covered pretzels

Sprinkle with any toppings you like, ie smashed candy canes or any sprinkles you like

Chill in fridge

When chocolate is set put some of each in jars

label and list ingredients on the back, attach label with string,ribbon or raffia.


Spiced nuts

You will need

500g of any peeled nuts (almonds,hazelnuts,cashews,walnuts,pecans etc) must be unsalted

2 tbsp finely chopped fresh Rosemary

1/2 tsp Cayenne pepper

2tsp brown sugar

2 tsp sea salt

1 tbsp melted unsalted butter


Pre heat the oven to 180

Put the nuts into a large bowl and mix well and tip onto a large lined baking sheet spread out evenly and bake for 10 minutes

In a bowl combine the Rosemary,cayenne,sugar,salt and melted butter

Toss the nuts in the mix and stir  well so all the nuts are coated. Can be eaten warm or cooled and put into jars.

Nigella’s Christmas Rocky Road

This recipe makes 25 small squares so you can multiply accordingly.

You will need

250g milk chocolate

250g dark chocolate

175g soft unsalted butter

175g golden syrup

200g Amoretti biscuits or use rich tea if you like

140g brazil nuts

150g Glace cherries

125g mini marsh mallows


Melt the 2 types of chocolate,butter and syrup together in a heavy based pan on a low heat stirring until melted

Put the biscuits into a freezer bag and break into bits (chunky not dust) do the same with the brazil nuts

Take the pan off the heat add the biscuits,nuts,cherries and marsh mallows

Tip into a foil tray aprox 9 1/4 x 12inch and pat down , it will be bumpy hence the name

Put in the fridge and chill, when chilled cut into 24 squares

Put into a jar, label and write ingredients on the back,attach with twine,ribbon or raffia.


Cookie mix layered in a jar

This makes enough mix for 30 cookies

You will need

A litre jar

90g white chocolate chips or  white chocolate chopped into chunks

15g rice crispies

200g plain flour with 3/4 tsp bicarbonate soda dn 1/4 tsp baking powder sifted together

110g soft dark brown sugar

90g dark chocolate chips or chocolate chopped into chunks

110g castor sugar


Carefully layer each of the ingredients into the jar pressing down each layer.

list ingredients on the back and add instructions – pre heat oven tp 180, cream 100g soft unsalted butter until fluffy mix in 1 egg and 1 tbsp water, add the entire contents of the jar into the bowl and mix until well blended, put blobs of the mixture on lined trays , they will spread and cook for 10 – 12 mins makes 30 cookies.
