Home made beauty products

If you are putting together a pamper hamper or need a nice gift or stocking filler these ideas are great , I would not recommend giving any of these except the lip balm to anyone who is pregnant because of the essential oils as they can be dangerous, or to anyone who has a skin complaint or allergies. I would also list ingredients on the back of the tag along with instuctions on how to use the product.

Look out for pretty jars in cheap shops or charity shops, if you do buy them from charity shops make sure they are put through a dish washer cycle, you can get jars cheaply online too. You can buy luggage labels and decorate them or make them yourself, attach the lables with twine, raffia or ribbon.

Brown sugar body scrub

You will need

1 cup of brown sugar

1/3 cup of olive oil

20 drops of any essentail oil you like

(you can make larger quantities just multiply the ingredients accordingly)

Mix all ingredients together and put into a pretty jar. On the tag write Brown sugar body scrub, on the back write the ingredients list and instructions – apply a small amount to damp skin rub over skin then rinse off, do not use on face.

Peppermint and Lavander foot scrub

You will need

1 cup sea salt

1/3 cup of olive oil

10 drops peppermint oil

5 drops lavander essential oil

Mix all ingredients together and put into a pretty jar, make a label and don’t forget to put the ingredients on the back and instructions-rub into damp feet paying attention to the heels and any areas where you have hard skin and rinse off and dry feet.

Milky oatmeal bath soak

This is so easy yet really softens the skin

You will need

2 cups of porridge oats any sort as long as it is unflavoured and that is all ( you have to try this it is so moisturising)

Blitz the oats in processor until it is a very fine powder, put into a jar and that is it, so simple, label it and on the back put ingredients and  instructions-add 1/3rd of a cup of mix in the bath water and stir around, the water will go milky, this is not a body wash just a soothing bath soak.

Lip balm

For this you will need little pots you can buy from some chemists or cheaply online. You could use tiny tins too, you can buy pill boxes or tins online .

You will need

Tub of Vaseline (pound shop)

Cake flavouring ( mint, lemon, orange, strawberry, vanilla etc in small bottles in the baking section of the supermarket)

Melt the vaseline in a plastic bowl in the microwave at 30 second increments until liquid, then pour a  4 caps full of the chosen flavour into the bowl and mix, pour into the tubs or tins and chill, if you are making different flavours then divide the melted vaseline into smaller heat proof dishes and stir in small ammounts of the different flavours in and mix and fill pots or tins and chill. Buy some small round stickers and write “Cherry lip gloss” or whatever flavour you have made on the sticker and stick it to the bottom of the pot or tin. You will make a lot with alarge tub of vaseline.

I hope you give some of them a try, they will make great gifts, don’t forget to make some for yourself too, we could all do with a bit of pampering.

x Dawn
