Friday 5 – Local Hotspots

I laughed out loud when typing the title, I live in the West Midlands and, in my opinion, one of the most boring places on earth! I thought of the places I liked to go to, I ruled out pubs and restaurants in favour of shops! so here are my 5:

1.The Mailbox, Birmingham. this complex was built along the canal and they converted old warehouses that used to be where the barges collected and delivered goods . The Mailbox has around 50 designer stores including Harvey Nicols, Jaeger and Armani, there are a number of Spa’s  and hotels too as well as cafe bars and restaurants. The BBC have a local news station called midlands today and they broadcast from the Mailbox too. There are also a number of small galleries where local artists show their work. If you are ever in Birmingham this place is worth a visit.

2. The Black Country Museum. The Museum has real streets, made up of terraced houses, shops, stores and schoolhouse, pub, fire station etc , the town represents a typical Black country community. It has people dressed in period costume and you can have a lesson in the local school-house, drink in the local pub and buy sweets made in the traditional way, there are canal boats and you can even go down a mine shaft and see the coal face where miners like my Mothers family including her Brother worked.  There is a museum building full of items and displays that show the industrial revolution and the development of the engineering work that the Black Country is famous for. It is a good day out.

3. Merry Hill Shopping Centre , this is my local shopping mall and I have spent many an hour here, there are the usual stores here plus an eat central that houses lots of types of cuisine, there are also shops around the perimeter such as Homesense, Toys R Us, Halfords etc and Pizza places fast food restaurants and my favorites Nando’s and Frankie and Benny’s.

4, Himley hall, this is a lovely grand house and it hosts weddings and functions and fairs, we love to go to the Christmas fair which uses downstairs rooms of the hall plus a marquee. we take the dog walks around the grounds and the lake and if poplar with Anglers and walkers too.

5. Featherstone Carboot sale, this is the largest bootsale in the Midlands with hundreds of booters , it takes a whole morning to get around,it os only about 20 minutes away from us and go quite often, I love it!
